Seagrass Ghostpipefish
Very hard to find due to their size and camouflage, this Seagrass Ghostpipefish (Solenostomus cyanopterus) was found by our dive guide Simon at Elephant Rock, Similian Islands, Thailand. It took a moment or two to even see what he was pointing at.
Horsing around
Ghostpipefishes are related to pipefishes and seahorses, essentially looking like a cross between the two.
They never grow longer than 15cm and swam motionlessly, upside-down, feeding on tiny crustaceans.
Camouflage
Like their related species, ghostpipefish are masters of camouflage, often changing colour and shape to match the rocks,
coral or seaweed to minimise their visibility.
