Surgeon Fish
This picture was taken in the Similian Islands, Thailand in 2007.
Powder blue surgeon fish (Acanthurus leucosternon) are very common but their stunning colouration always catches your eye.
Cuts like a knife
The scientific name of the family of surgeon fish comes from Greek words
akantha and
oura,
translating to
thorn and
tail,
refering to the distinguishing knife or scalpel like protrusion on the side of its tail (caudal peduncle).
