Picture of Masked Butterflyfish

Masked Butterflyfish

This picture of a pair of Masked butterflyfish (Chaetodon semilarvatus) was taken at one of Sharm El Sheikh's house reefs, Far Garden. Being so close to the construction of large hotels has had a huge impact on the house reefs, but they are still beautiful.

Mates for life

Butterflyfish usually swim in monogamous pairs and stay with their mate for life. Monogamy provides many benefits including increased mating cycles, allowing for better protection for the eggs and juveniles and shared predator detection.

Usually seen hovering around coral ledges, butterflyfish sometimes also swim in large aggregations like Schooling Bannerfish.
